FAQs

MATERIAL BITCOIN

What is a bitcoin wallet?

A Bitcoin wallet is software that allows you to store, send and receive bitcoins. It is similar to a physical wallet where you store your cash, but instead of notes and coins, you store your cryptocurrency.

When you create a Bitcoin wallet, you are assigned a unique address on the Bitcoin network, which looks like a string of letters and numbers. This address is like your “account number” on the Bitcoin network. You can share this address with other people to send bitcoins to you, and you can also use it to send bitcoins to other people.

Is Material Bitcoin safe?

Yes. Material Bitcoin stores your bitcoin safely.

Material Bitcoin is a cold wallet. Since it is not connected to the Internet, your data, such as your private key, is never exposed and can never be hacked. Additionally, it is made from AISI 304L stainless steel, which makes it a highly durable and secure device.

How do I know that the private key generation process is secure?

The private key engraved on each Material Bitcoin wallet is the equivalent of your bank card’s PIN number. This is considered extremely sensitive data that only the owner of the wallet should know.

That’s why we make sure our manufacturing process is 100% secure, employing a state-of- the-art, open-source key generator and which engraves the wallet without any human intervention.

You can do this by scanning your QR code or entering your address manually.

How do I move some or all of the bitcoins from my wallet to another address?

The purpose of the Material Bitcoin wallet is for you to never need to send your bitcoin to another address since the address engraved on your wallet is nearly 100% hacker proof (unless you show your private key around that is).

If you still want to move your bitcoin from one address to another, you will have to import your private key into a trusted bitcoin wallet manager (such as Exodus) on your mobile.

Each wallet manager is different, but, in the case of Exodus, you will need to follow the steps below:

1. You need to download the Exodus app from the Play Store / App Store.

2. If you’re a newbie, you might be wondering where to register or instead you can create a new ready-to-use Exodus cryptocurrency wallet. Don’t worry! When you sign up on Exodus for the first time, it will automatically generate a new wallet where you can send and receive funds.

3. In the bitcoin section of your portfolio, you need to click on the settings wheel (in the top-right corner) where you will see the option to “Add bitcoin from a private key”. This will add bitcoins to your Exodus wallet from another address.

4. Once you have your funds in your Exodus account, you can send those bitcoins to the address of your choice by simply clicking the send funds button for each of the cryptocurrencies you have.

What would happen to your wallet if we no longer exist as a company?

Nothing at all. Your bitcoins will remain safe and secure since we do not actually store your bitcoins.

You are the sole owner of your bitcoin.

We are like a safe deposit box company. If you buy a safe deposit box, the company does not even know what your key is, they don’t own your safe deposit, and you don’t really care if they go bankrupt.

Important: Never enter the private key of your Material Bitcoin card on a web page. The moment you do, you will lose control of your funds irreversibly.

How does the Material Bitcoin wallet work?

The private key

Your wallet has a unique private key covered by a metallic security strip. We’ve designed it this way because the key/password is the only way to access your funds.

The private key is all you need to transfer your bitcoin to another address. You are literally the only person in the world who knows the private key engraved on your Material Bitcoin wallet.

Therefore:

  • Do never allow anyone to memorise, copy or photograph your private key.
  • Don’t lose your wallet.
  • Don’t let anyone steal your wallet.
  • Do never enter your private key on a website.

In any of these cases, you may irreversibly lose control of your funds.

The address

The address gives you, or someone else, information about where to send bitcoins and have them delivered to your wallet. You can also use it to check your funds or see your transaction history. This address is something that anyone can see or that you can enter on any website without fear.

Where are your bitcoins exactly

Your wallet has no electronic components. So, your bitcoins cannot actually be stored on it physically. Really, they are not anywhere. But your bitcoins are completely yours because, at this very moment, the fact that those specific bitcoins are stored at the address engraved on your wallet is permanently noted on thousands of different computers. That’s how the bitcoin blockchain works.

Your bitcoins are absolutely yours. And there is no deeper and more complete way in which they belong to you. They are much more yours than any money you may have in a bank. And, by the way, that money, like Bitcoin, is not really in the bank either! It’s nothing more than a simple entry on the bank’s computers.

You can rest assured: Your bitcoins are on your wallet, because on thousands of computers synchronised with each other, it says that your bitcoins are on your wallet. Anyone in the world who consults it, will see that it is so.

What forms of payment are available?

We accept payments with debit/credit cards, PayPal and cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether, USDT…

Is there a minimum or maximum amount of bitcoin I must put on the wallet?

No. You can add as much or as little bitcoin on your Material Bitcoin wallet as you want. There is no minimum or maximum amount.

What happens if I sell all my bitcoin?

Nothing! Your wallet will still function property, and you will always be able to add more bitcoins back into your wallet.

How do I convert the bitcoins in my Material Bitcoin wallet into dollars or other currencies?

As mentioned in the previous section, to carry out any transaction with the Bitcoins stored in your Material Bitcoin wallet, you need to import the private key found on your Material Bitcoin wallet into a Bitcoin wallet manager such as Exodus. Please see the previous question for information on how to export your key to Exodus.

Please be aware that once your wallet’s private key is entered into any type of electronic device, you are exposing the control of your  money. It is only as secure, or insecure, as the equipment you are using.

Once you have your bitcoins in your Exodus account, you can send them to your other accounts on any exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, etc.) You can convert your bitcoins to dollars or other currencies from these exchanges without any problem.

FAQs

MATERIAL SHADOW

What is Material Shadow?

Material Shadow is a version of our Material Bitcoin cold wallet with several changes for all those people who want extra security:

  • The full address of your Material Shadow wallet is only on the QR code located in the center of the wallet.
  • There is no reference to bitcoin on the wallet. We’ve done that because, if someone finds your wallet and doesn’t know what Material Bitcoin is, they won’t be able to know it.
  • And the most important thing: It’s split in two! We’ve released this split version so you don’t have to fear that your badge could be stolen. Without the two halves, not only will NOBODY be able to access the bitcoins in your address, but they won’t be able to scan the QR to see how many bitcoin there are (they won’t even be able to see which address it is).

What is the difference with the Material Bitcoin wallet?

While the Material Bitcoin wallet is a single piece with the address in the center of the plate and the QR of the address on one side; the Material Shadow is two pieces that separate in the center where you have only the QR of the address. So, if you want to see the balance you need to put the two halves together and complete the QR.

But does that mean that I need to have both halves with me whenever I want to check the balance or make a payment?

No because for that, in the same box as the Material Shadow, you will also have the Material Bitcoin Portable edition,  a thinner plate where you only have engraved the public address and the QR code to take it with you wherever you want without the risk of losing your funds if you lose it.

What does separate shipping mean?

With this additional option you can choose if you want us to send you the two halves together in the same package or, as a security measure, we will send you the two halves of the wallet in different shipments so that there is no risk that anyone can steal your funds. They will arrive in two different envelopes in two different packages and using two different delivery companies.

As you can see, we take the security of your wallet very seriously.

What happens if I lose the Material Bitcoin Portable?

Absolutely nothing happens. Since only the public address is engraved, the only thing you can do with the Material Bitcoin Portable is to receive payments and check your balance.

The private key is only engraved on the back of your Material Shadow wallet and, as it is split in two, you need both halves to see the full private key.

What is the purpose of Material Shadow?

Material Shadow is the version of Material Bitcoin for all those people who want to make sure that no one can get to their funds.

With this version you can store each half of the wallet in a different location and still carry your Material Bitcoin Portable in your pocket to check your wallet balance and get paid quick and easily.

What is the Material Bitcoin Portable edition?

The Material Bitcoin Portable is a small card that you can carry in your wallet, without compromising your funds as it only has the address and the QR of the address engraved on the front of the card.

We say you do not compromise your funds as the private key is only engraved on the back of your Material Shadow badge.

How do I check the balance of my Material Shadow?

Using the QR of the address on your badge (or the QR in the Material Bitcoin Portable) in the following ways:

You can scan the QR of the address on your Material Shadow wallet (never the private key!) in a search engine (like blockchair.com) by hitting the camera button, to check your balance.

If you find it more convenient, use a mobile app like Wealth Check Bitcoin (Android) or Satpile (iOS). With it you can scan the QR of your Material Shadow badge and not only see your balance in bitcoin, but also its current equivalent in euros.

Important: Never enter the private key of your Material Shadow badge on a website. If you do so, you will irreversibly lose control of your funds.

Can my bitcoin be taken from me if half of my Material Shadow gets stolen?

No.

To access your funds, you, and anyone else who steals it, will need both halves of the wallet.

This is because since it is divided in two, the private key is not complete until they are put together. With only one half you will have only half of the private key, and it is completely impossible for them to access your funds with only one half.
